ADA & SEO Improvements
We've implemented a few ADA & SEO improvements in the Havarti release - which if you caught our blog, you may have learned how ADA & SEO often go hand-in-hand!
ADA Improvements
Aria Label for Galleries
There is a new Aria Label field available for images in a photo gallery that can be used when an image has a link. Links added to images can contain link text, in which case, an Aria Label is not required as long as the link text is descriptive. For uniformity, some districts prefer generic link text such as 'Read more' to be displayed in the image overlays. The system automatically adds generic link text when link text isn't added to the image. In this case, an Aria Label should be added to describe the link. An Aria Label is available to screen readers but not visible. The Alt Text field can still be used to describe the contents of the image but is not required unless the image itself contains information.
Keyboard Navigable News Headlines
We've added a new 'Use Keyboard Navigable Articles' setting in the news headlines block. This is designed for styled headlines displays where a flyup overlay displays the news summary on hover. Adding Keyboard Navigable will allow users to tab through the headlines to reveal the flyup. No harm or visual change will occur if this setting is applied to non-styled news headlines.
SEO Improvements
Update Permalink URLs to be more SEO friendly
Most features now provide permalink URLs for direct sharing (news posts, stories, custom forms etc). We've refactored how these URLs are generated to make them more consistant and SEO friendly.
